The A1 Pet Emporium Journey - How it Began

When we first set out to create A1 Pet Emporium, we knew it had to be more than just a pet store. We wanted a place where pet owners could find everything they needed under one roof, paired with expert advice and a genuine love for animals. The journey began with a simple idea and a deep passion for pets, and it has grown into something truly special. Here’s the story of how A1 Pet Emporium started and the key moments that shaped its path.

The Spark That Ignited the Dream


The idea for A1 Pet Emporium came from our own experience as a pet owners. The allergy issues we experienced with our Pugs, Bonnie & Clyde, was the determining factor. We also found it frustrating to visit multiple stores just to get quality food and treats for our dogs. Many places lacked knowledgeable staff who could offer real help or advice. We wanted to change that by creating a store that combined variety, quality, and expertise. The Christmas Eve Blizzard of 2009 was the day we decided to phase out of the travel business and into the healthy pet business. Our doors opened on February 20, 2010.


Research Insights

We started by researching what pet owners really wanted. We talked to friends, family, and local pet communities. The feedback was clear: people wanted a reliable, friendly place where they could trust the products and get support for their pets’ diet, health, and happiness. We spent countless hours learning about healthy pet nutrition from every reputable source we could find. It was an exhausting process but well worth it and very enlightening.


Building the Foundation


Launching A1 Pet Emporium involved more than just filling shelves. We concentrated on three key pillars:

  • Quality products: We collaborated with reputable brands and local suppliers to ensure that every product met high standards. Our standards for foods means that we will not sell any foods that contain corn, wheat, by-products, or soy.

  • Knowledgeable staff: It took quite some time before we could actually hire any staff. But when the time came, we knew it was crucial to hire individuals passionate about animals and their needs. We trained our team about pet nutrition and how we wanted our customers to be treated and the importance of making sure that customers have an enjoyable shopping experience.

  • Community connection: Our goal was for A1 Pet Emporium to become a hub for pet enthusiasts, organizing events, workshops, and adoption drives.


Choosing the right location was another vital step. We really did not have much choice because we were still operating a travel agency. So what did we do? We put up a shower curtain that divided the two business and ran back and forth between the two. It was actually a little bit ridiculous to some. But it is all we had to work with. Our current store in NW OKC/The Village is in the same shopping center as the original store, just across the parking lot and much larger!


Overcoming Early Challenges

Like any new venture, the initial days were filled with challenges. One major hurdle was managing inventory. We needed to understand which products were in demand and which were not. This required constant adjustments and close monitoring of customer feedback.


Building trust was another challenge. People often prefer familiar stores, so we had to demonstrate that A1 Pet Emporium was worth visiting. Providing excellent customer service and hosting community events helped foster a loyal customer base. We started with regular adoption events and continue with them to this day with a dedicated and secure space allocated just for them in each of our stores.


Creating a Unique Shopping Experience

From the beginning, we aimed for the store to stand out. Instead of a cold, impersonal retail space, A1 Pet Emporium became a welcoming place where customers could relax, ask questions, and even bring their pets inside. We designed the layout to be as pet-friendly as we could and were generous with the treat samples when our four legged customers visited. Community support was crucial to our growth. Local shelters and rescue groups partnered with us for adoption events.
